Newsletter for games through 4-24-16

TECH NOTES: I’m still seeing that “database in use” error and continue to work on a solution, however, I’m mostly able to close the page I’m on and log in again and things work out.  I know it’s annoying, but that should be a reasonable workaround if you get stuck.

NO HITTER!!! Drew Smyly of the Rays threw a no-hitter against Boston on 4/19/2016, striking out 11 in the process.   It is not entirely surprising, since his actual WHIP (.73) is awfully similar to Jake Arrieta (.73), who of course had an actual no-hitter.  Please refrain from allegations that the digital Smyly is using PEDs….

COMMENTARY: Holy Eric Forslund!  In his second week in the league he rolled a 6-1 record with the Chisox and seems to have the ship moving in the right direction….and we could officially name this Tim Walsh Week since he was tied for the best record on the week, has the Twins in first place, has the best record in the AL, and is in first place in wins-over-reality…Philly posted the best record in the NL east; the Nats are mimicking the success of the actual team…hard to improve on a 14-4 start, but Andy has his club .5 ahead of the actual crew…and, incidentally, the best record in the ASFBL…Rick Wynne has the Cubs atop the NL central, keeping pace with the real Chicagoans…Arizona raced to a 6-1 record (congrats to newcomer Mike Milos), best in the NL this week, and put some heat on the Dodgers…Padres still hold the best WOR in that division…Baltimore and Tampa are tied in the AL east, and Jaime Richardson has the Rays +2.5 to make them competitive…Tony Bernacchi’s Bosox had the best record in the division to bounce back from a slow start…The AL west is the tightest division, with only 3 games separating first from last…and no team is worse than a half game behind reality…Symonds’ Mariners gained the most this week…Goldschmidt had 5 homers and 16 RBI on the week…the Mets’ won Asdrubal Cabrera hit over .500…Drew Smyly of the Rays tossed 18 scoreless innings…Darren O’Day of the Orioles struck out 17…in 7 and 2/3rds innings…Eduardo Nunez of the Twins stole 4 bases on the week…Arizona had 3 players hit .400 and better…and none of them was Goldschmidt….

OPENING DAY, 2016!!!!

COMMENTS: Welcome aboard, John Kvach!  He’s entered exactly one lineup and has the Padres +3 WOR to lead the league…long-timer Tm Walsh accomplished the same feat with the Twins…Jamie Richardson, also in an inaugural run, was just behind a 2.5 with the Rays…Andy Somers was an impressive 11-1, and it’s probably even harder to improve on the 9-2 start of the actual Nationals…there’s nothing better in the early weeks than extra-inning games for the real team; the relievers pile up innings…for the same reason, there’s nothing worse than extra-inning fantasy games early on, since you burn at-bats and innings out of your starters and bullpen…Gordon Leckie’s 9-3 start with the Tigers is best in the AL…every member of the AL west is even or better in WOR….Chuck Ballingall has the Dodgers +2 WOR and atop the NL west…Trevor Story only had 2 fantasy HR, but is due to seriously adjust up…Dan Murphy hit .491 for the Nationals, tops in the league…Chris Davis already has 9 HR….Logan Kensing of Detroit managed 4 wins in relief…Joe Ross of Washington started the year with 27 scoreless innings…his actual ERA is all of .61…Tiajuan Walker of Seattle pitched 16 and 2/3rds innings without issuing a walk….

TECHNICAL NOTES: We WILL have AAA players next week, although they may have standard defense ratings until the baseball-reference website gets the defensive stats up…if you have a microsoft email account (ending in msn.com or hotmail.com) it’s blocking the league emails; I’m working on it, but let me know if you find a solution.

Dry run update

Just sent this out via email, and I’m posting it here just in case.  Please email me if you see this message here but it never arrived in your email…

I’m getting excited for the start of the season! We’re experiencing some spring kinks with the new server. Stuff to know:

1) If you hit a login error, check that you are using the new link (http://www.asfbl.net/login.aspx) or just follow the link from the asfbl homepage (https://asfblblog.wordpress.com/).

2) If you see a “mac state” error just log in again…it means something weird has happened to the godaddy server.

3) If you see any other error, please send me the error if you can. You can either do a screenshot or just cut and paste everything on your web page.

If you haven’t tried logging in yet (about half of you look like you have), it’s probably worth doing over the weekend.

Jon
