Newsletter for games through 8-25-13

26 lineups this week…it’s weird even to say that that’s fewer than we have been getting…still well above our historical average…

As the more astutue have figured out, the results were posted earlier today.  Apologies for the lateness of the newsletter.

COMMENTS:  The Tigers, Bosox, and DRays combined to go 18-0…the Tiger mark proved their best-record-in-the-league is no fluke, and the Bosox-DRays charge reaffirmed that the AL East is a bloodbath…Bosox moved into positive WOR territory…The Bosox are now in a dead tie with the Jays for first…Treffer’s Texans crept ever closer to Symonds in the AL West…and the Angels had the best record in the division…Houston is +8 WOR….The bottom 3 teams in the NL West all had winning records…the top 2 did not…The Cards gained ground in the NL central….Adam Dunn leads the ASFBL with 43 HR….Chris Davis has 39….Miguel Cabrera is 20 points ahead of Yadir Molina in the batting average race…

27 lineups this week, including 2 from people I know to be traveling in Europe.  Incredible!

COMMENTARY:  The big story in MLB is the rise of Dodgers, and that’s the big story in the ASFBL this week: Chuck’s Dodgers went 5-1 and are putting heat on Casey’s Giants…Kudos to the Reds and DBacks, who are bucking against difficult WOR circumstances but who each had 5 wins this week…Skrovan’s Indians went 5-1, at a time when the real club is scuffling, but that was only second-best in the division to the Tigers’ 6-1 mark….although the Tribe sights might be on the wildcard, given that the Tigers have the best record in all of ASFBL…Rick Wynne’s +1 WOR keeps his lifetime record of never having a negative-WOR year in tact…the AL East bloodbath remains in tact, with the Orioles picking up a half game….that’s big movement in that division…Houston had 4 wins this week and is +8 WOR…3 of the last-place ASFBL clubs have positive WOR numbers…four second-place teams have negative WOR…As the actual Brewers fade, Chris’ team continues to impress, posting 4 wins this week….Khristopher Davis had 6 HR and 14 RBI for the Brewers this week….Brandon Belt hit .538 for Kansas City….the Brewers lead the ASFBL with 134 stolen bases….the Reds have drawn more walks than anyone with 447…the Tigers have 446…Washington leads the ASFBL in HR with 158, but is 12th in runs scored….the actual, innings-weighted ERA for fantasy Giant pitching is 2.87…the Dodgers are now #1 in the ASFBL power rankings….

TWO CYCLES IN ONE WEEK!  A LITERAL BICYCLE!

Ian Desmond of WAS hit for the cycle against PHI on 8/11/2013

Stephen Drew of STL hit for the cycle against LAD on 8/7/2013

COMMENTS: Detroit was the big winner this week, posting the best record in either league and adding to their runaway lead in the AL central…the NL wildcard race is developing into quite a showdown between the Nats, Pirates, and Brewers…the Dodgers, Rockies, and Reds could also be contenders, and nobody is as far as 10 games back in the NL west…Toronto, Baltimore, and Boston are turning the AL East race into something epic…Texas inched forward on Seattle in the AL West…the Brewers, Astros, Chisox, and Cubs are all making the most of mediocre actual clubs, and making serious noise in the WOR standings…Every division leader has a postive-WOR number, and 3 are in double-digits…Every NL central team had a winning record…KC was 4-3; that’s a dangerous team with spoiler written all over it…Donnie Murphy of the Cubs had 6 HR last week…he’s got 4 in 28 actual AB…Miguel Cabrera hit .519….Don’t know if you saw this actual stat in action, but the Dodger broadcast reported in last night’s game that Matt Harvey had more walks allowed in that game than he’d had in the previous 5 combined….turns out the number was 2…

29 lineups this week!

First full week after the break…Toronto is clearly the story of the week; they are a half game out in the AL East and put together the only winning record in the division….3 teams are within 3 games of first place out there…only Seattle, Detroit, and Cleveland in the AL also had winning records….both other AL division leaders gained ground…San Francisco and Atlanta came out of the trading deadline solidifying leads….Pittsburgh won’t let the Cards run away with the division, and Cincy posted a winning week…The Brewers are +10 WOR….25 ASFBL teams have ERAs under 4.00…Adam Dunn had 5 HR last week…and had 11 walks…Stephen Drew had 12 RBI…Kimbrel retired 10 batters on the week and had 7 strikeouts….Kole Calhoun hit .520 for the Angels…The Indians lead the league in walks allowed, although they aren’t that far ahead of Boston…the Bosox pitchers, however, lead the league in strikeouts…Rick Porcello likes the Twin uniform and turned in a quality start for Tim this week…21 trades came in over the past 2 days…
