Newsletter for games through 7/22/2012

COMMENTS: I don’t know that I’ve seen Rick Wynne have an ofer, but I guess it happens to us all.  The Angels took advantage…Arizona and Cleveland got to it this week, and they have plenty of time left…St. Louis is ahead by a nose in the NL central….the Reds were 4-3 but still lost ground…The Padres and Mariners each posted winning weeks, each in the basement of their divisions, and each in positive WOR…Adam Dunn has only 21 ASFBL HR; look for him to break out…Adrian Gonzales of the ASFBL Chisox hit .593 last week….gotta run, trying out a new piece of internet software elsewhere and staying 2 steps ahead of the tsunami…

NAME GAMES:  Best food preparation outfield: Fryer-Cook-Baker (Eric, Aaron, and Jeff).  All aquatic outfield: Bass, Carp, Trout.  Vasectomy outfield: Blanks, Below, Belt (Kyle, Duane, Brandon).  Relational outfield: Friend, Brothers, Cousins (Justin, Rex, Scott).

ALL-STAR UPDATE: Maybe it’s just the Angel partisan in me, but I notice that Bryce Harper (ASFBL .287, 8 HR) is no Mike Trout (ASFBL .333, 10HR)…Trout is due to adjust up…

COMMENTS: The Dodgers, Pirates, and Nationals all had prefect records over the short week in the NL…Only Boston pulled it off in the AL…The Cardinals moved into a tie with the Reds on top of the NL central…The Angels 53 wins would lead 3 other divisions, but they’re still chasing Texas in the AL west…Toni Bernacchi traded for both Melky Cabrera and Andrew McCutchen, who are #1 and #2 in ASFBL batting average, respectively…add in Konerko and Braun, and 25% of the top 12 hitters on the Boston roster…Oakland and Anaheim both lead Texas in the power rankings…the Braves had another winning week…the Twins and Rockies continue to post impressive WOR performances…

Newsletter for games through 7-8-2012

If you’re like me, these next 2 days are the longest 48 hours of the year…I can make it from November to April, but am receiving no addiction treatments in the middle of July….I’m sure you’ll all be joining me to watch the California College All Stars game on ESPN 3 tonight (isn’t that just the Cal State Fullerton baseball team?)…

WOW!  In the same week…

Jordan Zimmermann of WAS threw a no-hitter against SFG on 7/5/2012

Yovani Gallardo of MIL threw a no-hitter against MIA on 7/2/2012

Melky Cabrera of MIL hit for the cycle against HOU on 7/8/2012

…I think this is the first time in ASFBL history that we’ve ever had 2 no-hitters in the same week, and I’m SURE that it’s the first time we’ve had 2 no-hitters AND a player hit for the cycle in the same week!

SHORT WEEK:  Lineups will be due next Tuesday as normal, with a stat upload on Monday, but we’ll only play the Fri-Monday series.  It is a chance to reset your starting rotation, if you have a inclination to do so.

NAME GAMES: There are 16 different 2-letter acronyms that major league players use in lieu of first names.  See if you can match the last names to this 2-digit list: JC, DJ, JP, AJ, JA, JJ, BJ, RJ, JB, JR, LJ, JJ, DJ, JD, TJ.  Trivia: Who is lone player to use an acronym but not use a “J”?

COMMENTARY: The Atlanta trade strategy may be working’ they were 6-1 last week, best in the NL…The Reds claimed the top spot in the NL central, thanks to picking up 2 games on the Cards this week…the lead is 1…The Yankees just never go away; -7 WOR but a 5-1 record this week (best in the division) and only 4.5 back with half a season to go…Look out for the Twins; 6-1 record was the best in the division, and they’re in striking distance…The Angels trail Texas by 7 games in the west…coincidentally, the Texas WOR figure is 7 games…Seattle posted a winning record…The Mets and Cubs each had a shutout last week…on the other hand, they were each against each other…Philly is +5 WOR, and might gain even more ground if the real team can’t get it together….Toronto moved to within a half game in the AL East; congrats to Hugh for doing a great job in a brutal division….and congrats to Tony, for hanging on to first…

Newsletter for games through 7-1-2012

COMMENTARY:  In the NL, Milwaukee picked up 2 games in the central and asserted themselves in the race…The Giants are acting like they might run away with the west; the Dodgers are +2 WOR but 5 games back…The ASFBL Phillies aren’t getting the bad press for being suddenly old, and they still have time to pose a challenge to the Nationals…In the AL, the Royals posted the best record in the league at 5-1; Oakland was only a half game behind at 5-2…In the actual AL east, all 5 teams are .500 or better; in the ASFBL, the Jays, Orioles, and Bosox are all doing better than their actual counterparts…Baltimore hitters lead the ASFBL with 121 HR…The Marlins lead the ASFBL with 80 stolen bases…National pitchers have allowed a league-low 54 HR, and the bullpen has allowed only 10% of inherited runners to score, best in the league…Minnesota pitchers have allowed only 169 walks, the best in the league, and really amazing when you consider that no other team has fewer than 200.

28 lineups submitted this week!
