27 lineups submitted this week!

Remember you can check out your players of the week on the stats page at http://commweb.fullerton.edu/jbruschke/asfbl/Stats.aspx

COMMENTS: Washington and St. Louis each tiptoed another game ahead in their divisions while the Dodgers moved to within half a game of San Francisco…Baltimore and the Chisox each stumbled, and while nobody in the AL East was really able to take advantage, the Tigers vaulted up the standings in the AL central…the fantasy Angels aren’t as hot as the real club but are +1 WOR overall, but Texas at +7 WOR might be difficult to catch…Congrats to Congalton’s Cubs, who are +4.5 WOR after a rocky start…Josh Hamilton is currently in line to win the ASFBL Triple Crown, and would be leading both leagues in all categories if not for David Wright’s .390 batting average…Florida leads all ASFBL teams with 61 stolen bases….the Mets have 7….Baltimore has the most ASFBL power with 86 homers, 2 more than Texas…The Phillie bullpen still hasn’t allowed an inherited runner to score…Minnesota pitchers have allowed only 87 walks, fewest in the ASFBL…Ryan Vogelsong has 10 strikeouts on the mound against Miami on the 24th….he also have 4 strikeouts at the plate…

RARITY: Josh Willingham of MIN hit for the cycle against MIL on 5/18/2012

PROGRAMMING NOTE: The “adjust down” function seems to be giving pitchers too much benefit on the strikeouts…I’ll be looking into that and seeing if there’s an error with the formula or the code, and if so, it should be fixed by next week…all team batting averages are within .01 of their actual figures…

RACES: The NL is getting tighter…Florida and Wasinghton remained locked at the top of the East, and the Braves crept a game closer…The Reds went 6-1 and the Cardinals tripped, closing the gap to 2 games…The Giants and Dodgers each went 6-1…The net NL west WOR is +10….Every AL division leader had a winning record….Boston and Detroit each had big weeks, looking to break out of the middle of the pack…Baltimore is the only division leader with a negative WOR, and that’s only 1 game…The Cleveland fantasy team ERA is .74 above their real counterpart, positioning them for a significantly adjustment down.

FEATS AND FAILURES:Shane Victorino and Ryan Braun each stole 5 bases last week…Albert Pujols of Anaheim hit .280 last week, a number Mike Scioscia would gladly take…Felipe Paulino pitching 19 shutout innings last week…

Wilson Betemit of BAL struck out 5 times against NYY on 5/15/2012
Jonathan Lucroy of MIL had 5 hits against NYM on 5/15/2012
Felipe Paulino of KCR had 15 strikeouts against TEX on 5/15/2012

Charles Leesman of CWS had 12 strikeouts against LAA on 5/17/2012

HEADLINES

Ackley of the Mariners hits for the cycle!

If you haven’t been checking it, the players of the week can be found on the stats page…Craig Allen of the Cards had 5 HR and 17 RBI…

ACTIVITY UPDATE: 29 owners submitted lineups this week; 28 last week.  This is basically awesome.  Usually there are more owners who just want to stand pat, but it looks like almost every team is getting some attention to detail.  So, thanks to all of you for making the league so active!

TECH UPDATE:  There’s a bug that is resulting in some AAA records failing to disappear after a player gets promoted.  It should be fixed by next week’s stat update.  If you notice any duplicate records, with one player still receiving AAA stats, let me know.  And thanks to those who let me know about affected players this week.

LEAGUE TRENDS: Washington moved into a 1st-place tie with Miami in the NL East, thanks to posting the best record in the division…9 of 11 teams in the NL West and Central were .500 or better…Texas had the best record in the league at 5-2, even as the real club is sliding a little bit…Cleveland crept a half-game closer to the Chisox; it will be interesting to see if the Sox can maintain their +5 WOR and hold off the Tribe…Three teams in the AL west are in the top-9 WOR spots…The Blue Jays moved into a tie with Baltimore in the AL East, as the Yankees quietly posted another winning week…Atlanta is a surprising 3rd in the overall team power rankings, and might translate that into a serious run on the NL East…Baltimore hitters have clubbed more real-life homers than any other ASFBL club…The Dodgers and Nationals each have pitching staffs with real-life ERAs under 3.00…The Bosox are in the top 8 in both homers and batting average, but 22nd in team ERA…Padre hitters have drawn 144 fantasy walks, tops in the league…Oakland hitters have robbed 62 hits so far, also a league-leading figure.

COMMENTS:  An interesting trend…for one week at least, nobody in the mighty NL West had a winning record, while 4 teams in the NL central did….The Nationals posted a perfect, week, and gained ground on Florida even though they went 5-2…Kudos to the Cubs, who went 5-2 and pulled themselves within 2 games of Houston and Pittsburgh…Seattle posted an AL-best 6-1 mark and moved +2 WOR…The Padres are 4th in the NL West but a league-leading +5 WOR…Washington has an ungodly 2.19 team ERA…Philly relievers have still not allowed an inherited runner to score…Oakland has the best AL pitching…Baltimore, St. Louis, and Texas have the top 3 team power rankings, and all lead their divisions…The Chisox with their +4.5 WOR hold onto the lead in the AL central….The Yankees, who never go away, posted a 5-2 mark and are in the middle of the pack in the AL east.

RICK WYNNE’S OBSERVATION:

“Last night in reality, Hamilton hit 4 HRs and had a total of 5 hits.  In this morning’s ASFBL results, Hamilton hit 4 HRs and had a total of 5 hits for the week.  Granted, a lot more ABs in fantasy to accomplish the same result, but thought it was very weird.” …  makes you shudder to think about what will happen when those 4 real HR get added to the stats..

WEEKLY REPORT: The Reds posted a perfect 6-0 week, best in the league….and the Cardinals still seem undaunted in the NL central with a 6 game lead…Texas already leads the AL west by 8 games…The Padres are 3.5 back in the powerful NL West, but have the best WOR figure in the league…The toast of the AL was the Chisox, who went 6-1, are +3.5 WOR, and lead the AL central…by only 2 games, with Cleveland and Detroit in striking distance….5 of 6 division leaders have positive WOR figures…Florida is running neck-and-neck with the Braves, thanks to a +4.5 WOR…The Rangers have the team triple-crown, leading the ASFBL in batting average, homers, and runs…Oakland defenders have robbed 40 hits, tops in the league…Toronto hitters lead the ASFBL in walks with 98….The Philly and Arizona bullpens haven’t allowed an inherited runner to score yet….speaking as an Angels partisan, I don’t think the real club has yet prevented an inherited runner from scoring…Mike Baxter of the fantasy Mets struck out 11 times in 24 at-bats….he also had 7 hits…in real life he has 8 Ks in 21 AB.
